There is an old adage in specialist sports that coaches are hired to be fired, along with the apparently never-ending rotating door of training jobs in the NFL has once again place a litany of bench supervisors in new positions entering the 2019 season. When it comes to odds where man will get terminated first, Washington Redskins??coach Jay Gruden tops this list.
Gruden is your +300 favorite at BetOnline ??to receive his walking papers, with Pat Shurmur (+700), Matt Patricia (+1000), Bill O’Brien (+1200), Dan Quinn (+1200), Doug Marrone (+1500), Jason Garrett (+1500), Mike Zimmer (+1500), Adam Gase (+2000) and Brian Flores (+2000) rounding out the top 10.
Since he took the reins??in 2014, Gruden’s Redskins have made the playoffs just once, when Washington ended first in the NFC East in 9-7 SU at 2015 before dropping to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.
The beginner quarterback-running back combo of Dwayne Haskins and Derrius Guice has supplied’Skins fans with reason for hope for its future, but it may be inadequate to spare Gruden’s occupation if Washington has a tough beginning to the effort. With holes across the roster on both sides of the ball, that is a realistic possibility in D.C.
Remaining at the NFC East, the New York Giants are set to start life with no Odell Beckham Jr., but the Giants could certainly find themselves in an identical situation to the Redskins. General manager Dave Gettleman’s decision to pick Duke quarterback Daniel Jones together with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft raised eyebrows during the group, and things got even stranger when he said he would not mind sitting Jones supporting Eli Manning for numerous seasons.
Given Manning’s recent performance, it is tough to think he will turn the clock back at 38, so it might be another long season for Big Blue. Shurmur looks like a competent coach, but the lack of ability on offense could finally doom him if necessary after more sputters under center.
The coming of Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia at the Motor City at 2018 was hailed as a great hire at the moment, however, the Lions did not scare anyone this past year and finished the year well out of the playoffs at 6-10. Detroit’s roster looks much better after some significant offseason additions, although I am not anticipating the Lions to compete at the NFC North, I believe they’ll be great enough to maintain the Bill Belichick disciple in his place for the time being.
