Graeme Souness predicted Liverpool’s win over Chelsea”ugly” while Jose Mourinho endorsed his previous club philosophy beneath Frank Lampard.
The thunderbolt and Roberto Firmino header, either side of a disallowed Cesar Azpilicueta equaliser of trent Alexander-Arnold, saw the league leaders open up a two-goal lead within half an hour in Stamford Bridge.
The Reds held on for a success which was their 15th Premier League win in a row and sets these five points clear of Manchester City although chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante’s dazzling solo effort put up a tense final 19 minutes.
Here is the way Liverpool’s victory was responded to by our Super Sunday pundits and whether their early advantage over City has any significance.
“They gained awful now and got off with it. They were distinct groups in both halves. In the first half, they have been fabulous – really threatening. However, in the second half for the past 30 minutes, they hung . The midfield could not keep hold of the ball and they were under pressure.
“For the goal, Fabinho appeared like he had been towing a caravan. Is that they had a difficult game . Chelsea will rightly think that they should have got something from this match .”
“When you win games, you need to hang there. When you return on the bus you won’t actually analyse it. You move onto the next game. There are instances but if you told them until the game they would have accepted it. Should they win the league they will not return at this result thinking’we might have done better there’ – they’ll just be pleased to have the medal in their hands, though it is just September.”
“it is a huge outcome. Liverpool and manchester City will be considering the fixtures of each other if they go away to large six teams since it’s an opportunity. Both teams, if they arrive there or not, have to aim for 100 points. 14 points can only drop. A draw is not a good outcome. In the past, you would go away to Arsenal and you would be happy with a point. City have changed – drawing away from home isn’t a fantastic result.”
And just what about Chelsea’s functionality? Their manager was at the studio and he’s on board with Lampard and club philosophy, even though he hopes that the fans do not start accepting losing.
“I hope that they do not get accustomed to it [losing] – that’s the key thing. When you get started accepting defeats because your team play along with your players gave it their best to be pleased.
“I think when you get used to it, big clubs quit being big clubs. They shouldn’t be utilized to it. It shows people are prepared for the season and ready to accept what the year will be under a manager who’s among the best professionals I worked with and also a supervisor.
“The reality of these figures say Liverpool are 10 points before Chelsea – they aren’t going to battle for the name. Let’s support the doctrine of giving time for the players and the supervisor to work.
“I like their ideas. I think that their kind of play accommodated to the profile and has been accommodated to what football is like now. In this momentthey are far from being able to compete for names .”
