Trailer 1898, Los últimos de Filipinas

Notes by
The Director
The film can be interpreted from a current point of view. Neither is it a war film nor does it speak of the glory of Spain, but quite the contrary. It’s anti-war and talks about the absurdity of wars “.
The script is “as faithful as possible” to the historical facts, although some are fictional characters, such as the one interpreted by Alvaro Cervantes, which serves to tell about the “disenchantment” of the soldier who arrives with the spirit of war.
“We do not show heroes but human beings, with the best and the worst of each of them, who have to live together for almost a year in a forced and absurd confinement inside a church in a village in the Philippines “.
“At first we thought about going to Baler because the village still exists,” says Calvo, but that town had also been chosen by Coppola to shoot “Apocalipsis now” and then it all went wrong. For this film on the Vietnam war, they built all the sets that were later destroyed by a typhoon. Shortly afterwards, the main actor died of a heart attack, so Coppola moved his shoot to Santo Domingo. “I then found in the Canary Islands the tropical beaches and virgin areas that I needed to recreate the site of Baler at the end of the 19th century”
