After a series of family tragedies and setbacks, young William Legrand and his faithful servant, Jupiter, discover a strange gold beetle, the perfect beetle on the mysterious Sullivan Island to add to William’s collection.

Then, as they leave, Jupiter discovers an old bag of moldy skin with a map written in invisible ink. While his good friend Lieutenant Grant, an insect specialist, investigates the rarity of the gold beetle, the secret marks of the map appear when exposed to light and the heat of fire.
