Baker Mayfield wasn’t pleased with how Duke Johnson handled his situation, such as a trade request, last week during the team’s minicamp.
Some Cleveland Browns teammates were not happy with the way his response was managed by the quarterback.
NFL Network’s Michael Silver reported Thursday that, according to numerous sources, many Browns players approached Mayfield in the locker room following the critical remarks about Johnson of the QB to enroll their displeasure and hash out their differences.

“So it is pretty striking for a participant to become involved in a teammate’s business in anything but a supportive function,” Silver said on NFL Network’s Inside Minicamp Camp Live. “We watched it last year with the Steelers and Le’Veon Bell — that has been an anomaly. Baker Mayfield is the clear leader of that (locker room) but I’m told by numerous sources that several veterans came to him in the locker room after those remarks about Duke Johnson and let’s say voiced their displeasure, saying,’Listen it’s 1 thing to be the leader but that is a guy who’s experiencing something, it is company and we need to support him’ Baker may not have agreed with thembut he heard them so that’s something to watch on as a very, very talented group gets ready for what might be a significant season.”
Following Johnson reiterated he would prefer to get traded, Mayfield basically said good riddance, last week.
“That is something which we have been dealing with for a while,” Mayfield said at the time, via The Plain Dealer. “When we have guys that want to be here, they’ll show that, they will voice that. Obviously he’s going to manage his things you’re not or he wants, but you’re either on this particular train, it is moving. You can escape the way or you are able to join us. So it is what it is.”
Mayfield also stated Johnson’s scenario was”self-inflicted.”
“I wouldn’t say I am not happy about it,” Mayfield added. “It is only the way he’s handled it. It may be a stir-up from the networking, it may be however it needs, but if someone wants to be here, they’ll be here in that circumstance. You have men within our locker room who are dying to get playing time, that are going to be here, and I get it…”
Conversely, Jarvis Landry spoke in support of Johnson.
“I expect he understands and believes that men are here for him, whether he is here or not, the relationship goes past the participant, the person as well, so I certainly hope he understands that and understands that there are men that are here for him,” the receiver said.
The Browns don’t practice until training camp in late July, once if they remain relevant by then the locker area will reconvene to hash out of any issues.
Silver noted that head coach Freddie Kitchens is currently playing a much larger role in the offensive installment through June practices.
